It is a noodle bar in a shopping centre called Whiteleys, located in Bayswater, London. Our aim was to create an endless cavern with bamboos. In contrast to our Great Bamboo Wall in China, where we used the bamboos vertically, in this project the bamboos are horizontal in order to make a section (or a profile) of the cavern. Mirrors were placed at both ends so that the space would be as seamless as noodles. A cave is ‘the other’ roof indoors. Our fundamental approach towards architecture is to provide a space with a roof, not by a wall. This idea was realized as well in our Sakenohana project in London, completed in 2008. Furniture was also all designed by ourselves. The strength of the bench is secured by the steel plate of 3.2mm thick folded like Origami.
