Club Villa Renovation
Club Villa, designed by Geoffrey Bawa as a private villa in Bentota, a place said to have one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Sri Lanka, was renovated and converted into a hotel.
Bawa learned to regard architecture not as a “vessel for containing things,” but as an “assemblage of things,” encompassing furniture, lighting, curtains, objects, and other elements. Based on this philosophy, the renovation was carried out while preserving Bawa’s design as faithfully as possible.
The architecture itself was altered as little as possible, with only minimal interventions made to details such as furniture, materials, and lighting in order to fulfill the functions required of a hotel. Working together with local craftsmen also allowed us to experience firsthand the quality of the Sri Lankan craftsmanship that Bawa so deeply valued. The garden design, including the trees and reflecting pools, was preserved as close as possible to Bawa’s original design, reaffirming that the essence of Bawa’s design lies in its dialogue with nature.
