In collaboration with HASEGAWA, we have created a Butsudan (Buddhist household altar) that blends modern aesthetic with traditional elements. The resultant piece can become an integral part of everyday life.
The front cabinet door, the facade of the structure, is designed using the Musou lattice technique which consists of two layers of natural wood latticework. By opening each door people can warp into the world of their ancestors.
The interior of the Butsudan features the Gohonzon (venerated image) placed atop a Naguri-finished wooden panel. This Japanese scraping technique creates a sea of clouds-like appearance on the wooden surface. Nested below are three layers of black lacquered drawers.
The Sara (six Buddhist utensils) were also designed exclusively for Haku-in, with brass-colored tools corresponding to the light-filled “world of the Buddha,” and black lacquer tools corresponding to the “present world.”
