Haseko-Kuma Hall
The auditorium and lounge on the first and second floors of Building 11 of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo (completed 1969) were renovated from a conventional lecture hall into a “Nest of Knowledge” with museum and social functions.
Seventy-six wooden boxes were installed throughout the auditorium and lounge, each displaying past and present research outcomes. The exhibits are not fixed but are continually updated, creating a “living museum.”
Just as a bird’s nest nurtures various birds, the “nests of knowledge” cultivate and generate diverse forms of university research. The collective of wooden boxes transforms the concrete campus into a soft, vibrant “forest.”
A continuous, three-dimensional projector connecting walls and ceiling further allows the entire “forest” to function as an immersive space for visual experiences.
