Hirosawa Museum of Art
Nestled in the greenery of Chikusei City, Ibaraki Prefecture, a museum was designed to house the collection of Kiyoshi Hirosawa, an art collector. The building and landscape are enveloped by the vast number of megaliths Hirosawa accumulated over many years, allowing the architecture and garden to merge seamlessly, effectively “erasing” the building within the landscape.
The roof, resting atop the megaliths, is supported by lightweight wooden joinery, with joists exposed inside. In contrast to the weight of the stones, the exhibition spaces feel warm and light.
The project proposes an alternative to the typical concrete “white cube” museum, exploring the expressive potential of natural materials—stone and wood—for architecture and interior space.
