To embody the theme of SUKI – sense of multivernacular, the pavilion designed by Takamasa Yoshizaka in 1955 as an “architecture” was transformed into a pavilion as a “garden.”

A 5 cm-deep pond was created inside, over which a 70 cm-wide white-wood walkway was placed. Following the tense sequence of walking along this path, works by the four participating artists— Hiroshi Senju, Katsuhiko Hibino, Jae-Eun Choi, and Yoichiro Kawaguchi — appeared one after another, creating a sequential experience.

In a survey of 300 art critics, the Japanese Pavilion received 18% of the votes and was selected as the top pavilion in its category.
