Hida Takayama Café ”Chair & Coffee”
An old wooden elementary school was renovated to create a café for Hida Sangyo of Hida-Takayama, a leading manufacturer of Japanese wooden furniture.
The ceiling was stripped back to expose the original timber structure of the former school building, while bark-on cherry wood was used for the exterior. Inside the café, Kumahida wooden furniture — characterized by the refined joinery and organic curves distinctive of Hida Sangyo and jointly designed by Hida Sangyo and KKAA — was installed. Handcrafted Echizen washi with a bold flowing-water motif was adopted as an interior finish. The lighting features pendant lamps created by local glassblowing artisans.
