KIGUMI, Thematic Exhibition “Walls of Public Life” The 5th Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2025
We designed “Humanise Wall” the theme of the 2025 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, as an assemblage of small pieces of wood.
45mm-square Lauan timber was interlocked in an alternating pattern and stacked as if weaving fabric. By reinterpreting Jigokugumi, a traditional Japanese wood-joinery technique, in a contemporary way, the wall is supported simply by weaving wood with wood, without the use of any metal fittings.
Small pieces of wood come together to form a single wall, and the wall eventually becomes a forest. Light and shadow enter between the multiple layers of wood, transforming the hard wall into a warm and soft presence.

2025 서울도시건축비엔날레의 주제인 「인간의 감정에 호소하는 벽–Humanise Wall」을 작은 목재의 집합체로 디자인하였다.
45mm각의 라왕 목재를 서로 엇갈리게 맞물려, 천을 짜듯 쌓아 올렸다. 일본의 전통 목구조 방식인 지고쿠구미(地獄組)를 현대적으로 재해석하여, 철물을 사용하지 않고 목재와 목재를 엮는 것만으로 벽을 지탱하였다.
작은 나무들이 모여 하나의 벽이 되고, 벽은 이윽고 하나의 숲이 된다. 겹겹이 쌓인 나무 사이로 빛과 그림자가 스며들어, 단단한 벽을 따뜻하고 부드러운 존재로 바꾸어 간다.
