This project is one in a series of works in Sakai Town, Ibaraki Prefecture. For a small, wooden soba restaurant, we sought to endow the space with the stall-like quality appropriate to soba as a meal that originated in street food — namely, a temporary, provisional, and light character.
The formal operation of lifting and peeling back the roof eaves, rather than dropping them downward, stands in contrast to the downward-sloping roof that suggests adhesion to the ground. Through this gesture, a certain sense of yatai-ness is interpreted and expressed in architectural form.
