Tokyo MXTV
The headquarters of Tokyo MX Television, standing in front of the greenery of the Imperial Palace, was redesigned as a tunnel space of “green moiré.” I envisioned the broadcasting station as a tunnel that connects the ordinary world with another, alternate realm. The inner surface of the tunnel is composed of a two-layer system: floating S-shaped louvers and vertical louvers behind them. As one progresses deeper into the tunnel, these two layers interfere with each other to generate moiré patterns, evoking the sensation of moving through a forest cave or traveling through the inner core of tree trunks. Using the vocabulary of louvers, I aimed to create a dynamic, organic, and ecological experience.
This was a challenge to express “depth” and “movement” within a limited space and with a limited budget. While moiré effects using glass or thin screens are common, achieving a three-dimensional moiré with real materials is a rare accomplishment.
