As the 50th Anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan. Exhibition “Beyond Borders-Architectures of Japan” features Kengo Kuma and other 21 internationally renowned Japanese architects with 36 groups of architectural projects presented to deliver a narrative of modern Japanese architecture across regions and cultures.
One of exhibited work COCOON was inspired by the distorted tea bowls favored by tea masters in ancient times, we designed a wooden tea house with a deformed shape.
By assembling 72 pieces of 15mm-thick wooden boards with special connectors, we created a movable tea house with a transparent touch which can be disassembled and transported.
Japanese tea houses originate from Chinese Tea culture that pursued spiritual liberation and developed as criticism against the restricted architectural styles. COCOON is an attempt to revive such spirits of the tea house in modern times and may also become a “cocoon” to foster our new, free spirit to replace the concrete boxes favored by western modernism.
This movable, warm architecture will become a vessel to nurture our lifestyles to coexist with nature after the pandemic.
