A rug using a thatched roof as the motif entitled “’80×80’ CARPET DESIGN PROJECT OF 80 ARTISTS” was exhibited in the UCCN Gallery at the Shenzhen Sea World Culture and Art Center to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the birth of Katsumi Asaba, a well-known art director in Japan.
The challenge was taken on of creating a deep texture that cannot be expressed with an ordinary rug, taking a hint from the stepped thatching used for the roofs and walls of Chise traditional Ainu houses.
The rough shading provided by the stepped thatching enabled a strong expression to be achieved that appears to be made with living plants.
