Nihon House 55th Anniversary Model House
By overlaying the traditional ta-no-ji plan — one of the inherited wisdoms of Japanese vernacular houses — with movable partitions, and enveloping the entire building in delicate hinoki screens with a cross section of 60 × 30 millimeters that allow light and air to pass through, the transparency inherent in the lattice doors of traditional architecture is extended to the scale of the whole building.
All interior partitions are finished with taiko-bari washi paper, achieving a balance between openness and privacy.
In response to today’s fluid lifestyles, in which the boundaries between work and home have dissolved, this project offers a new version of Japanese wisdom as an answer.
