Sano Service Area Inbound Dramatic Area Sano
A service area themed around “wind” was designed as a place where people gather and interact, featuring deep eaves with the texture of wood.
By rhythmically varying the angles of the eaves, a large roof canopy was created that appears to billow in the wind, while the building volume was articulated into human-scaled segments. The 3.5-meter cantilevered eaves create a bright and open sheltered space beneath, providing the local community with a venue for a wide range of activities.
Inside, the space was planned as a flexible environment that allows for the free arrangement of furnishings while giving distinct character to different areas through the ceiling design. Soft chandelier-like lighting composed of tubular fixtures inspired by the Asama Fire Festival, a three-dimensional timber rigid-frame wall, and glass chandeliers that were once used in New York’s legendary Plaza Hotel were incorporated to create a variety of focal points within the open-plan interior. The diverse lighting effects across the ceiling generate a sense of excitement during the journey and successfully redefine the conventional spatial image of a service area.
