We designed a “growing” stool that both children and adults can enjoy.
The goal of the project was to allow visitors to learn while making the stool that a stool that is unstable at first can grow to be strong enough to support a person by reinforcing the wooden materials. The number and location of units to be added, as well as the vertical (in Japanese, tate), horizontal (yoko), and diagonal angles (naname), can be freely decided by each person, resulting in the one and only chair with a completely different look and feel for each person who makes it. The idea was to pass on the principles and culture of traditional Japanese wooden construction, which is made by gathering small, thin pieces of wood, to the next generation in a flexible and open manner.
