In Japan where rainfall is abundant, the technique of “bankin” meaning “sheet metal” was developed to create seamless roofs to keep the rain out. The process involves hammering and folding thin, ductile metal to make a leak-proof roof. Using this sheet metal technique, we designed a lampshade that looks like a whirlpool. The design is composed of several panels of varying in widths that join together at a seam, connecting with each other to form a swirl of light. The lampshade is composed of multiple materials: not only thick sheet metal such as brass, but also thin and soft metals such as copper. Thick and thin metals alike are folded and sculpted to add strength through geometry. Various recycled metals, including oxidized green-blue copper plates, can be reused, resulting in a light and sustainable product despite its metal nature.
