Shanghai Ring
We designed a ring-shaped mixed-use complex spanning multiple blocks in the central urban district on the west side of Shanghai. Offices and retail programs are linked through a multi-purpose hall that serves as a key node within the project. The project aims to pioneer a new type of urban development in which cultural facilities function as hubs, connecting multiple city blocks and diverse programs.
The ring-shaped bridges and pedestrian decks that connect buildings above ground are constructed of aluminum and preservative-treated wooden panels, creating a soft, warm, and lightweight texture that invites people in. The project challenges conventional textures and geometries—often heavy and rigid in large-scale urban developments—and introduces a human-centered design into Shanghai’s high-rise-dominated landscape.
