We designed a pavilion showcasing the art of Wakugi (Japanese nails), combining polycarbonate pipes with large Wakugi. These nails are crafted by Myochin Honpo, a family of armorers who have preserved the tradition of making Wakugi from soft iron using time-honored techniques since the Heian period in Himeji.

Located in the front garden of Mitsunodou Hall at Engyoji Temple, an ancient temple in the mountains of Himeji City also known as a filming location for The Last Samurai, the design aims for resonance between the large shadow cast by Mitsunodou’s grand roof and the deep black color of the Wakugi.

The shape of Wakugi was 3D scanned, and polycarbonate pipes were milled accordingly, exploring the connection between traditional Japanese craftsmanship and digital fabrication.
