MUJI House “Mado-no-Ie”
In collaboration with MUJI, we proposed low-cost, flexible housing that fits contemporary simple living. This is MUJI’s second housing project following “Hako-no-Ie”.
First, we defined housing as fundamentally an assembly of frames. Ultimately, a “house” is a collection of frames: those that frame external scenery; frames that control the movement of people between exterior and interior, between rooms; and frames that control the flow of light and air. “Mado-no-Ie” is designed as an abstract collection of large and small frames, erasing the very framework that constitutes these frames. The windows are random in both placement and size—that is, they are free—and nothing controls them. We aimed for a state that is thoroughly anarchic yet harmonious, peaceful, and transparent.
