The Cloud at Blankenese Church
The installation “The Cloud” is the outcome of a Polish-Japanese research and workshop program conducted in 2020–2021 by Kengo Kuma & Associates and the Faculty of Architecture and Fine Arts at Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University. Originally conceived during the pandemic and first exhibited at the Manggha Museum in Krakow, the work reflects a moment of uncertainty—when the future of architecture and its connection to nature felt obscured.
Now, four years later, The Cloud finds new life in the sacral space of Blankenese Church in Hamburg. This setting, in collaboration with students from HafenCity University Hamburg and Krakow University, allows the piece to fully integrate material, shape, light, music, and atmosphere into one cohesive experience. All components—traditional craftsmanship, natural materials, and digital technologies—are woven together to express a new relationship between humanity and nature.
It is a poetic convergence of the hand and the brain, of reflection and renewal. This installation marks not only a continuation of our thoughts from the pandemic but also the beginning of a creative, cross-cultural dialogue—a gesture toward redefining our bond with space, material, and one another.
