Parking Building Takasaki

Gunma
Completed

A public parking buidling for 1,000 cars stands alongside the JR railway tracks at Takasaki Station. Precast concrete (PC) panels measuring 3,350 x 450 mm with sharply angled tips, together with frosted glass panels, are arranged in a random pattern to create the interface between the interior and exterior.
The angle and density of the PC panels were varied in response to the changing relationship between inside and outside. For example, their angles were adjusted according to the position of external obstructions: where no buildings block the view, the louvers were arranged perpendicularly so as not to obstruct sightlines. In front of vertical circulation cores such as elevators and staircases, frosted-glass louvers were placed at a higher density to allow indirect natural light to filter inside. Rather than applying surface paint, the PC panels were colored by mixing brown pigment directly into the material. This approach aimed to harmonize the texture with the historic brick buildings common in Gunma Prefecture.
