Expo 2025 Malaysia Pavilion
Based on the theme “Interwoven”, we expressed the landscape of Malaysia, where various ethnic, religious, social and cultural groups intersect. The use of bamboo was key, as it is a natural material with profound roots in both Malaysia and Japan.
Inspired by the traditional Malaysian textile “songket”, we’ve woven nearly 5,000 bamboo sticks together using computer-aided design. The bamboo facade of the songket creates a soft, fabric-like appearance that lets in natural light, representing the open, bright and powerful light of Malaysia. We wanted to bring this special light of Malaysia to the hills of Osaka. In the interior, we used the Selangan Batu wood from Malaysia for the floor and chose the color “tanamera” for the wall, which evokes the red soil to reproduce the image of Malaysia.
We wanted to present a place where the two countries intertwine – their people and nature, future and past. It is pointless to ask about the shape and silhouette of a textile. A textile can have a meaning because it forms a new state of a material when two threads meet and interweave. It will give a hint to architecture that tries to transcend the notion of a form.
