A spiral observation deck is planned near the triangulation point on Meyama, one of the peaks of Mt. Kannabi. Its form follows the mountain’s natural ascent, gently leading visitors toward a panoramic view of the Kyoto Basin. The exterior is composed of vertical louvers made from a variety of materials, echoing the diversity of the surrounding woodland.
The observation deck is raised nearly three meters above the triangulation point, opening up views toward distant landscapes that were previously unseen, including the city of Kyoto.
Shiraishi is said to have marked the southern starting point of Suzaku Avenue, the central axis of the ancient capital of Heian-kyo at the time of its construction. While preserving the existing hiking routes and the shape of the slope as much as possible, the project creates a place where visitors can encounter the history and memory of the site.
Both facilities adopt a Rock foundation system to avoid altering the existing terrain.
The project aims to respect and preserve the history and romance of Mt. Kannabi, while creating facilities that can share its appeal with the world.
