Otsunaeki Tamakawa
Tamakawa village took the lead in redeveloping ‘River/Filter’, one of KKAA’s most famous works from the 1990s, which was also the first building to use wooden louvers as a center for village activities on the riverside.
Originally constructed as a soba noodle restaurant along the Abukuma River, it was designed as a place where one can directly experience nature by subtly controlling light, visibility, and wind through the layering of wooden louvers of three different pitches.
The building, which had been abandoned for 10 years, was revitalized under the leadership of Tamakawa Village with new programs including a restaurant, bakery, microbrewery, canoe station, and canoeing classes, adding new flowers to the famous Otsuji-gataki waterfall, which is known to have been visited by Matsuo Basho.
