Xinhua Bookstore
In the mixed-use complex “Chuan Yue Fang” (designed by KKAA in 2021) located in Shanghai, we designed a community-based bookstore – Xinhua Bookstore. We created a place like a “garden” open to the local community, where event spaces, book displays, kids’ corners, cafe, and meeting spaces dwelling under one roof.
To create a fluid and open space, instead of using solid partitions in the continuous space, we applied interwoven linear materials and surfaces, to softly define the space with floating ceilings and screens. The canopy in the double-height space made of bamboo tubes creates a space like the shade of a large tree, providing a place for residents to relax.
